Depositing a Paper Check

Occasionally, departments receive a Paper Check from “State of Maryland – Treasurer’s Office” as a result of an independent arrangement with another Maryland State Agency.    The Preferred Method to send Funds to UMBC is via R*Stars Transfer in order for Financial Services to facilitate the electronic process (See details here.)

When a paper check is received and expected, please work with your Business Manager or Shared Services Department to deposit.

Mail the Paper Check along with the Departmental Deposit Form to Financial Services. 

Mailing address– UMBC, Student Business Services, Admin Building 3rd Floor, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, Maryland 21250.

    • During Telework times, please allow extra time before looking for this deposit on your REX Finance Report.
    • During Telework times, if you do not see the deposit on the report within 15 days, please leave a message at 410-455-2288 with questions regarding Departmental Deposits.

Inquiry for Paper Check

Questions regarding a Paper Check received from the “State of Maryland – Treasurer’s Office” can be directed to the State of Maryland.   If the detailed information on the Paper Stub is unfamiliar:

  1. Contact the number at the bottom of the Paper Stub for the “State of Maryland – Treasurer’s Office”
    • Listen to phone prompts and select option for “Questions about the Payment”
    • With the Pay Stub information available, please leave a message containing all the information on the Stub.  Be sure to include your phone number and your email address, so they can reach you.
  2. State of Maryland – Treasurer’s Office staff member has only partial information.   They will refer you to the State Agency that requested the check.
  3. Contact the State Agency that requested the check.   Be sure to include your phone number and your email address, so they can reach you.
  4. Write down the name of any State Employee that you communicate with regarding the Paper Check.

From the Paper Stub, the State Agency is part of the “Approp. Number” This “Approp. Number” can be found on R*STARS State Agency List.

Bypass the State of Maryland – Treasurer’s Office, if you have worked with the other State Agency previously. Please contact the other State Agency based on the Paper Stub information.  List of Maryland State Agencies – per State Webpage.

 

Requesting Funds Electronically Instead of Paper Check

The Preferred Method to send UMBC Funds is to receive an R*Stars Transfer rather than a Paper check.  Encourage other State Agencies to send us R*STARS Transfer.  Please provide them with the R*STARS Information listed  here.

 

Requesting a reissue of the Paper Check

The Preferred Method to send UMBC Funds is to receive an R*STARS Transfer rather than a Paper check.  Encourage other State Agencies to send us R*STARS Transfer.  Please review the instructions here.

Other Maryland State Agencies should be able to send an R*STARS Transfer to UMBC. If there are questions regarding the Paper Check being reissued, ask the other State Agency to contact banking services 410-260-7270.
